State CLE Requirements

Texas CLE Requirements

Texas attorneys must complete 15 credit hours of Minimum Continuing Legal Education each year, including 3 hours of legal ethics or professional responsibility.

Overview

The State Bar of Texas requires all active members who have been licensed for two or more years to complete 15 hours of accredited continuing legal education each compliance year. Of those 15 hours, at least 3 must be in legal ethics or professional responsibility.

Texas uses a birth-month compliance cycle. Your compliance year ends on the last day of the month immediately before your birth month. For example, if you were born in September, your compliance deadline is August 31 each year. This means demand is spread year-round rather than concentrated around a single deadline.

All 15 hours may be completed through accredited on-demand or online courses. There is no limit on online CLE credit in Texas, making it one of the most flexible states for busy practitioners.

Reporting & Compliance

Compliance Year

Texas uses a birth-month cycle. Your compliance year ends on the last day of the month before your birth month. For example, an attorney born in March must complete all 15 hours by February 28/29 each year.

Carryover Credits

Up to 15 hours may be carried over to the next compliance year, including up to 3 hours of ethics credit. Credits earned beyond the 15-hour minimum automatically carry over.

Credit Formats

All 15 hours may be completed through accredited on-demand and online CLE courses. Up to 3 hours (including 1 ethics hour) may come from self-study activities. Texas has no cap on online or on-demand CLE credit.

Non-Compliance

Attorneys who fail to complete or timely report MCLE credits may face suspension of their law license. Reinstatement requires completing all deficient hours and paying applicable fees.
