Coverage

What counts as Illinois D&I CLE

The Illinois MCLE Board accepts diversity & inclusion coursework across these areas.

Implicit & Explicit Bias

How biases — both conscious and unconscious — shape attorney decision-making, jury selection, hiring, and the day-to-day choices that affect client representation.

Cultural Competence

Building awareness and skills to work effectively with clients, witnesses, and colleagues from diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Inclusive Workplace Practices

Recruitment, retention, advancement, and the structural choices that make law firms and legal organizations actually inclusive — not just diverse on paper.

Access to Justice

How systemic barriers — geographic, economic, linguistic — limit access to legal representation, and what attorneys and firms can do to widen the door.

Anti-Discrimination in Practice

Avoiding discrimination in client intake, fee structures, and service delivery — and the professional-conduct exposure when it shows up in practice.

Representation of Underrepresented Groups

Practical considerations in serving communities that have historically been underserved by the legal profession, including pro bono and reduced-fee work.

Compliance

How the Illinois D&I requirement works

Illinois requires 1 hour of Diversity & Inclusion within each 2-year CLE cycle, as one of three sub-categories that comprise the 6-hour Professional Responsibility requirement.

The full PR requirement breakdown is 4 hours core Professional Responsibility + 1 hour D&I + 1 hour Mental Health & Substance Abuse. All three sub-totals count within the 6-hour PR bucket — not on top of it.

Every Illinois D&I course on TalksOnLaw is individually approved by the Illinois MCLE Board, each with its own PCAM course ID printed on your certificate for reporting through the Board's system.
