Chris Bogart
Founder of Burford
“Firms are not structured to finance complex contingency litigation.”
Chris Bogart is the co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of Burford Capital, the world’s largest litigation finance firm. He helped pioneer the modern litigation finance industry by reframing legal claims as financial assets that can be underwritten, priced, and managed on a portfolio basis. Before founding Burford in 2009, Bogart was a litigation partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore and later served as General Counsel of Time Warner, where he gained firsthand exposure to how litigation risk and spend affect corporate balance sheets and enterprise value.
At Burford, Bogart has overseen the firm’s growth into a publicly traded global business operating across the U.S., U.K., Europe, and Asia, financing thousands of commercial disputes and arbitration matters. His work has been central to the institutionalization of litigation finance, influencing how companies, law firms, and investors think about risk, capital allocation, and long-dated legal claims. Bogart frequently speaks and writes on litigation finance, legal markets, and the structural limits of traditional law-firm partnerships.
