Coverage

What counts as New York Diversity CLE

The New York CLE Board accepts diversity, inclusion, and elimination-of-bias coursework across these areas.

Implicit & Explicit Bias

How biases — both conscious and unconscious — shape attorney decision-making, jury selection, hiring, and the day-to-day choices that affect client representation.

Cultural Competence

Building awareness and skills to work effectively with clients, witnesses, and colleagues across cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Inclusive Practice & Workplaces

Recruitment, retention, advancement, and the structural choices that make law firms and legal organizations actually inclusive — not just diverse on paper.

Bias in the Legal System

Examining how bias manifests in courtrooms, charging decisions, sentencing, and other aspects of the justice system, and what attorneys can do to counter it.

Access to Justice

Systemic barriers — geographic, economic, linguistic — that limit access to legal representation, and what attorneys and firms can do to widen the door.

Anti-Discrimination in Practice

Avoiding discrimination in client intake, fee structures, and service delivery — and the professional-conduct exposure when it shows up in practice.

Compliance

How the New York requirement works

Experienced New York attorneys must complete 24 hours of accredited CLE every 2-year cycle (pegged to your birthday). The mandated subject breakdown: 4 hours Ethics, 1 hour Diversity (this requirement), 1 hour Cybersecurity. The remaining 18 hours can be earned across any approved area.

The diversity & elimination-of-bias requirement was added to address implicit bias, promote inclusive legal practice, and improve access to justice across underrepresented communities.

Do diversity hours count toward other NY requirements?
